The Marangu Route is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its popularity and the presence of huts along the route for accommodation. It provides a well-trodden path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Marangu Gate. You’ll trek approximately 8 kilometers on this day, making your way through the lush rainforest of Kilimanjaro. Your destination is the Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain.
On the second day, you’ll continue your ascent through the rainforest, eventually reaching the moorland zone. The trek covers approximately 11 kilometers, and you’ll arrive at the Horombo Hut, which is situated at a higher altitude. Here, you’ll spend your second night.
This is a crucial day as you’ll hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, covering approximately 10 kilometers. Kibo Hut is the base camp for your summit attempt. In the late evening or early night, you’ll begin the challenging ascent to the summit, Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit and witnessing the sunrise, you’ll descend back to Barafu Hut for some rest.
After your summit success, you’ll descend from Barafu Hut to Horombo Hut. This descent is approximately 20 kilometers and marks a significant change in altitude. You’ll appreciate the lower elevation and thicker air as you make your way back to Horombo Hut.
On the final day of your trek, you’ll descend from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate, covering around 20 kilometers. This marks the end of your Kilimanjaro journey, and you’ll complete the necessary formalities at the gate before heading back to Marangu.
